Although we havent been working in the woodshop much this summer we certainly have been busy bees! This summer has been chock full of goat shows and miniature horse shows! What a great time we have had...Riley won Reserve Champion with her goat at Tri County Dairy Goat show in Longmont, Colorado. She went on to Colorado State Fair where she won 2 Grand Championships, 1 Reserve Champion, and Premier Exhibitor!
Three days after Colorado State Fair we loaded up a few miniature horses and headed to Tulsa, Oklahoma for the AMHR Nationals. Rileys and Raider earned a National Top Ten in Youth Showmanship :) Then Raider went on to win National Grand Champion!!!! This is his second time winning that honor so now we call him "Two Time" and he walks with a certain swagger :). My yearling, Bondes Bouncin B Red Hott and Rockin won Reserve Champion Jr. Gelding. Whew-what a ride :)

Okay, i just love this one :)
Handcrafted from old reclaimed wood it just has so much character. I added some Drab Brown and Grungy Mustard paint to the outside but left the interior in the old woods wonderful aged patina. Great old screens inserted in the doors... It measures about 20 inches tall and 22 inches wide...great for hanging or stacking :) Just listed on ebay :)

Ahhhh the goose...everyone who even remotely knows me is aware of my "goose obessession"! Its a problem i really am not looking to solve. I dont know why I love them but i just do. I think they are beautiful birds even though one chased me once....So when i spied a goose in a photo of my buddy Peanut, of Country Folk Keepsakes, goodies I had her send me some more pictures...This weekend we did our own take on the goose made out of old reclaimed wood. I love the goose. I may or may not sell it. I may or may not sleep with it tonite :)

Meet Hotrod!!!

He is here at last!!!
This is "Hotrod"! He was a birthday present from my husband!
He is quite possibly the cutest thing i have ever laid eyes on!!!
Hotrod was purchased from Redrock Miniatures in Oklahoma City and Riley and i traveled to Wichita this past weekend to the AMHA Central Finals Show to pick him up!
This picture was taken while he was all dolled up at the show. He got third out of six stallions and was by far the youngest one. We were super proud!

Yesterday was his first day out with the herd. Our little mare felt she needed to put him in his place right away :)

2010 El Paso County Fair

This years County Fair was a busy but great week!
We started out with the Miniature Horse Show!!! Riley won Reserve Champion!

We had a few short days to recover and then on Wednesday was the dairy goat show!!! We started the day with a bang...Riley and her little goat Mabel won showmanship! Way to go Riley!!! She has another buckle to add to her collection :)!

She won the first year milkers class with Maggie...

Then she won Junior Grand Champion and Overall Reserve Champion with Stella!!!

My girl was on cloud nine :)))))

So it wasnt over yet..because she won Showmanship she had to compete in Large Animal Round Robin. All the kids who got first or second place in the various livestock showmanship competitions compete against each other! Each child competing has about a day to go around and find the other winners and learn how to show their animal and various information the judge might ask you about that animal. The competition began Friday morning. She started off showing her goat.

And then after a few minutes the whistle blew and she was on to the standard sized horse....

From there she showed a dairy cow...

And then she moved on to the 1200 pound Angus steer! Now i admit my heart was pounding with this one!!! I had my fingers crossed he would not crush my one and only child...

Nobody was more relieved than me when the whistle blew and she got to move on the sheep!!!

Her next critter was a pig. I am a bad mother. I was laughing so hard i didnt take any pictures. Her pig was totally uncooperative and refused to move! All he wanted to do was eat her boots!!! Riley was glad to get out of the pen and leave Wilbur in the dust!!!!

So then it was on to a fiber goat. The one she showed was a Cashmere. After Wilbur this was a breeze :)

And lastly was a Boer Goat, which is a market goat. I still cant fathom wanting to eat goat meat. Ick. This guy had some serious itches!

And then she was DONE! Phew!!! She ended up 6th out of 16 kids!!!
What a week!!! Now she is kickin back and relaxin with friends til State Fair!!!

This little fellow is Bonde's Bouncin B Knights Armor. We purchased him back in February for our daughter Riley to show and love on!!! Yesterday they attended their first 4h clinic in preparation for their first show at the end of the month. We LOVE Armor! Not only is he beautiful he is sweet as a bug!!! Riley is doing awesome learning how to set him up for halter!!!! Cant wait to see them hit the show ring!!!

I havent properly introduced you to Jeffrey yet. Meet Jeffrey. He was a Valentines Day gift from my husband this year. He is a miniature horse in case you hadnt noticed!!! He will celebrate his first birthday at the end of April! I think he is going to be one of the great loves of my life...
I am an impatient type A personality. I simply cannot wait any longer to see the face that lurked beneath all that winter hair! Miniature horses have hair like YAKS!!! So today i clipped Jeffrey's sweet face to see just exactly what he looked like...Please do not make fun of his ears...i didnt quite finish...my back was really killing me from leaning over!!!

Our miniature horses have struck up an unlikely friendship with the neighbors draft horses. Every morning when we turn them out they run to the back of our pasture to converse with their big friends. Its tough to see the extreme size difference between them. The light gray Percheron is well over 18 hands. Our two boys could literally walk underneath him!

Snowfall on the High Prairie

Usually when we are blessed with snow it comes at us sideways embraced by a frigid 40 mph wind. This morning was an exception so i decided to take some pictures of the unusual event!!!
Here is our outlaw gang of equines. Yes, the smallest is the ringleader. Nothing goes down without her say so. She is the Queen of the Silver Dollar....

Now the Labs love the snow...with Valentines Day in the near future i even captured a little "puppy love" between Clancy and Daisy!!!

We have been working steady even through the holidays to come up with some new designs...I thought i would share our latest listing on ebay this week with you.
First up is this incredible dough box with a matching stand...it took a wicked two days for hubs to build. He told me more than once it is a first and last edition!!!

And then there are my favorites-the cabins! I am a cabin freak!!! These have old screened windows and doors and a place to insert a dollhouse light or flicker bulb in the back. The light shines through so pretty!!! We made them out of old reclaimed wood and even added some chinking for a real old and early look!!!

It has been like living on the arctic tundra this past week!!! You know its cold when your boogers freeze every time you take a deep breath :) So after a week of dressing in 20 lbs of clothes to haul hot water to thirsty critters and doing barn chores in below zero weather a little warm up was very welcomed!
Riley decided to take the goaties up to the riding arena for some fun and games!!!

Holiday Tips!!!

I got these great tips in an email last year and I got such a kick out of them I thought I would pass them along....

1. Avoid carrot sticks. Anyone who puts carrots on a holiday buffet table
knows nothing of the Christmas spirit.
In fact, if you see carrots, leave immediately. Go next door, where they're
serving rum balls.

2. Drink as much eggnog as you can. And quickly. It's rare. You cannot find
it any other time of year but now. So drink up! Who cares that it has 10,000
calories in every sip? It's not as if you're going to turn into an
eggnog-alcoholic Or something. It's a treat. Enjoy it. Have one for me.
Have two. It's later than you think. It's Christmas!

3. If something comes with gravy, use it. That's the whole point of gravy.
Gravy does not stand alone. Pour it on.
Make a volcano out of your mashed potatoes. Fill it with gravy. Eat the
volcano. Repeat.

4. As for mashed potatoes, always ask if they're made with skim milk or
whole milk. If it's skim, pass. Why bother? It's like buying a sports
car
with an automatic transmission.

5. Do not have a snack before going to a party in an effort to control your
eating. The whole point of going to a Christmas party is to eat other
people's food for free. Lots of it. Hello?

6. Under no circumstances should you exercise between now and New Year's.
You can do that in January when you have nothing else to do. This is the
time for long naps, which you'll need after circling the buffet table while
carrying a 10-pound plate of food and that vat of eggnog.

7. If you come across something really good at a buffet table, like frosted
Christmas cookies or pralines in the shape and size of Santa, position
yourself near them and don't budge. Have as many as you can before
becoming
the center of attention. They're like a beautiful pair of shoes.
If you leave them behind, you're never going to see them again.

8. Same for pies. Apple, Pumpkin, Mincemeat. Have a slice of each. Or if you
don't like mincemeat, have two apples and one pumpkin. Always have three.
When else do you get to have more than one dessert? Labor Day?

9. Did someone mention fruitcake? Granted, it's loaded with the mandatory
celebratory calories, but avoid it at all cost.
I mean, have some standards.

10. One final tip: If you don't feel terrible when you leave the party or
get up from the table, you haven't been paying attention. Re-read tips;
start over, but hurry, January is just around the corner. Remember this
motto to live by:

"Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving
safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in
sideways, chocolate in one hand, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out
and screaming "WOO HOO what a ride!"

I am an avid student of natural horsemanship and know what it takes to get to this level and hats off to this guy...just goes to show you do not have to force horses into submission. With the right love, language, and leadership they are the most amazingly willing partners.

Here is my little Gracie...i took this picture a few months ago right after she turned one. She was pretty much untouched when i got her. The first time I tried to groom her she tried to kick and bite and bite me everytime I touched her...I am proud to say that little Miss Gracie now will stand tied for hours, stands good for the farrier, can be blanketed, loads in the trailer like a dream, and as of last week will jump small barrels, cross a tarp, and let me drape the tarp over her body. One day i hope Gracie can do what the horse in the video does....

A Long Time in the Making...

I have alot of ideas...they sometimes take a long time to manifest! Such is the case with this dutch door we FINALLY finished for Rileys room!!!
Since she is a bright and cheery little farm girl we thought her room should be a reflection of her. So whats better for a country girl than a barn door in her room!
Hubs made this door out of 100 year old pine so it has some great character!!!

Starting on SUNDAY 9/6 on the TDIPT Group Blog is the funny pet photo contest!!! Mille Fleur Banty hens and i came home with.....drum roll please.....

This is Stewart aka Stewie, or as i like to call him Stew Laroo.
Had i intended to get another kitten??? Not exactly. Ever since Rileys little cat disappeared a few months ago she has been pestering me for another. It is easy to say no to ads on Craigs List though. "No more kitties." I would say..."We have two already and soooooo many other animals..." YOu can imagine my spiel, i mean it is a legitimate argument afterall!!! That is until the barn door opened and there was Stew and is his littermates. He is a Ragoll/Siamese cross and quite possibly one of the cutest kitties i have ever seen. And that was the end of my legitimate argument. Suckerrrrrrrrrrr.
Stew really enjoys helping Riley with her schoolwork.

He seems to be good at making friends too...

Aside from being so very useful, he is just darn cute, did i mention that already?

Better Late Than Never!!!

I took pictures of Riley and her goaties at County Fair, i swear i did! But none of my pictures turned out in the indoor arena!!! Luckily another Mom with a better camera than mine snapped some pics!!!

This is Riley getting ready for showmanship. Another 4her was kind enough to show her the ropes. You have to scrub your goats tootsies with a toothbrush and then put BABY SOCKS on them so they dont get dirty on their way to the show ring!! And apparently your goats clip job must be perfect or else the judge will tell you so...that kind of stung a lil...i always fancied myself an above average clipper person. Apparently not!!!!

Goat showmanship is tricky, you must always be on the opposite side of the judge even while leading your goat. You are asked to do all these maneuvers and answer all kinds of questions. If i had been Riley i would have needed a valium or two....

Riley got 4th...i was elated both with the idea that she got fourth and that it was over! Phew-intense!!!!
Next we had the breed classes. Riley got second in both of those.

So what does a goat girl do in her spare time once the Fair is over??????

My Awesome Swap Gift!!!

TDIPT has had yet another wonderful swap!!! My swap partner was Tink from The Blackberry Briar! Lucky, lucky me!!! Tink is an incredible artist and i feel so fortunate to have recieved some of her wonderful goodies!!!
First i must share with you this fantastic lil black and white goatie she made me! I just loooooove this fella!!!

I would have been more than thrilled just to have gotten the goatie but guess what???? That wasnt all that was in that box!!!! Tink made Riley a little horse that looks just like Pippy, her real life miniature horse! OMG-now i am having to lay down with a wet rag!!!!

That would have been enough to make my summer but guess what? Yep, there were even more treasures!!! Tink makes the BESTEST room sprays and candles your sniffer ever sniffed!!!! Finally my house smells like something other than eau de dog!!!! She also included some goats milk soap :)
Thank you Tink for being such a super duper partner!!!!

Its COUNTY FAIR week!!!

Today was the biggie...what we have been waiting for since starting the 4h program this winter-County Fair. It was time for Riley and Pippy to shine and shine they did!!! Aside from winning two seconds and a third my dynamic duo won SHOWMANSHIP!!!! Showmanship is based soley on your ability to show your horse to the judge...you have to complete a pattern of maneuvers all the while presenting your animal at its best...this is a class she had not yet won-til today!!! In the fall at the awards ceremony she will be presented with a big belt buckle for her win!!! I could not be more proud..

Pippy met a new friend at the Fair today...Here she is meeting a 2000 lb PERCHERON named Charlie! The lady assured me it would be safe for Pippy to stand near him. I told her Charlie might be a nice fella but 35 inch tall Pippy would kick the snot outta him!!!!

We had another horse show this past Sunday...i didnt take nearly as many pictures as i should have cause it was just so darn hot but i did manage a few!!! Despite the sweat rolling down her face Riley did really well...she got two first place ribbons, a second and a third!
Ya'll have no idea how much i love this little horse...yes okay maybe its an addiction. SOmetimes i wish i had magical powers and i could be eleven again and show her myself!!!

Next weekend is the County Fair! Go Riley and Pippy!!!!

They say its your birthday.....

Yesterday my girl turned eleven. Where has the time gone????? She is growing up entirely too fast! I told her i would keep buying her goats if she promised to stay with me forever! Right now she thinks that sounds like a sweet deal ;)
If i am anything i am true to my word...so guess what she got for her birthday????? You got it-two more baby goats!!!!!!

My Weekend Project....

I have had this ugly little cupboard sitting in bathroom for the past six months half painted...i paint so many orders when it comes to doing my own house i kind of shove everything on the back burner. Yesterday i decided i couldnt look at the ugly thing anymore! I painted it to match Rileys calico quilt...her room and bathroom have a farm theme (big surprise) so i tried my hand at painting a few chickens on there. I am not sure Warren Kimble has anything to worry about but atleast Riley likes it!!!

City folks arent the only ones who experience traffic jams you know...Every now and again they happen in the sticks too. This is just what happens when a whole bunch of hens want to lay their eggs at the same time. Talk about getting hen pecked ;)

My daughter Riley competed in her first Miniature Horse Show today!!! She did just an awesome job!! She competed in three different classes and won two first place ribbons and a third!!!
Here she is doing her showmanship class...

And after winning her Halter class!!!!

What a fun day we had!!!
